Users will soon have a new feature that permits them to reduce the quantity of AI-made media appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the platform announced that it presently contains more than 1 billion AI videos.
Trial and Implementation
The update is undergoing trials over the next few weeks before a global release. This shift coincides with a surge in AI content, fueled by emerging video-generation tools.
AI Content on Other Platforms
Studies have shown that approximately a tenth of the most rapidly expanding video streams on another major platform primarily display clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this content is classified as low-quality AI content, a label for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is frequently nonsensical or surreal.
Based on user feedback that numerous viewers enjoy content made with AI tools, from digital art to science explainers, and we intend to give people the power to see more or less of that, depending on their own choices,” said a platform representative.
Volume and Proportions
The service shared that there are presently 1.3 billion videos on its app labeled as made with AI. In total, more than 100 m videos are added to the service every day, making AI content a limited percentage of its total content library.
User Control Features
Users will be able to reduce or increase the volume of artificial media they watch by opening the topic control feature in the application and selecting “AI-generated content”. Other topics that currently be adjusted under the setting cover current affairs, style, aesthetics, and choreography.
Platform Guidelines
Its guidelines mandate users to identify lifelike artificially created content, and it prohibits dangerous fake videos of public figures or crisis events. Any believable AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be deleted under its user guidelines.
Furthermore, the platform will henceforth attach an AI-generated tag to content created with its built-in AI features, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for spotting content made by AI. This action is aimed to help prevent users from trying to bypass the labeling process.
AI Literacy Programs
The platform is also launching a two million dollar AI literacy fund for experts and institutions to develop learning resources about ethical AI use. This initiative will support educational bodies focused on teaching computer science.
Moderation Strategy
The video-sharing app has defended its safety measures, during debate over proposals to lay off hundreds of safety staff in the United Kingdom. The company is planning to eliminate hundreds of positions in its content moderation department in its British office, with worker representatives and online safety experts raising concerns that people are being substituted by machine-led review.
A trust and safety lead stated that people-led review would still have a role, but automated tools can protect employees by eliminating the most distressing content ahead of it gets reviewed by humans. The company stated a notable drop in disturbing and violent content seen by content reviewers over the previous year due to reliance on its automated systems.
It is vital to combine people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” she said. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to limit contact with harmful content as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is really helping us operate efficiently.”
